YUCK! Flood waters leave behind algae

After severe flooding ravaged portions of Dodge County throughout June, those remaining puddles of water may look rather innocuous. But beware, health risks abound in the flood plains and back yards where pools of standing water remain.

Jody Langfeldt, a Dodge County public health officer, said the high volume of runoff throughout the county has created a perfect breeding ground for toxic blue-green algae.

"Blue-green algae needs warm weather and it needs nutrients to grow . . . especially in shallow water that gets a lot of sunlight," Langfeldt said.

May an eagle fly

Human hands and hearts rescue an eaglet For several months wildlife photographer Jack Bartholmai had been taking pictures of a pair of adult eagles on a farm south of Beaver Dam.

Last fall, Bartholmai saw a stick being carried by an adult and was able to observe where the new nest was being built. They brought in materials for a few weeks until winter took over then focused on surviving by fishing along the open Beaver Dam River, eating road-killed deer and anything they could find.
